Try to remember before looking again
Why try when you are not yet sure you know the answer?
Make a brief retrieval attempt before you reopen the answer.
The short answer
Retrieval practice means trying to produce an idea from memory before checking it. The attempt can be part of learning, not just a test—especially when accurate feedback follows and the difficulty is manageable.
Looking immediately feels efficient, but it removes the need to search memory. A short attempt tells you what is available and makes the correction more meaningful.

Actively producing an answer usually supports later retention more than simply seeing it again. Even an unsuccessful attempt can prepare later learning when the correct explanation follows.
The useful sequence is attempt, check, correct and try once more. Difficulty alone is not the goal; accurate follow-up and a reachable challenge matter.
A simple example
Before reopening the formula
Jon cannot remember every step of a formula. He writes the two parts he does remember, then checks the worked example and makes a corrected attempt. The first gap directs his attention; the second attempt confirms whether the correction is usable.

What the evidence supports
Evidence level: Strong research support
Systematic reviews and classroom studies strongly support retrieval practice for later retention across many settings.
Limits and honest caveats: Not every struggle is useful. Feedback, prior knowledge, question format and the eventual task matter; an unsupported wrong answer can persist.
