Why stop practising when another immediate repetition feels so good?
Compare back-to-back repetition with practice spread across separate occasions.
The short answer
Spreading repetitions across separate occasions usually supports later retention better than putting the same repetitions back-to-back. The useful gap depends especially on when you need the knowledge again. Research does not provide one perfect interval for every learner and subject.
Back-to-back repetitions often look successful because the answer is still active. A later attempt asks memory to rebuild the route, which gives you better information and another opportunity to strengthen it.

Distributed practice separates repetitions in time. Across many verbal-memory studies, this generally produces better later retention than massing the same repetitions together.
Timing is not a magic number. The intended retention period matters, and classroom results vary. Treat any schedule as a starting decision that should respond to actual recall.
A simple example
Two learners, the same three attempts
Ari answers the same question three times in ten minutes. Bea answers it once now and returns on two later occasions. Ari looks smoother today; Bea’s later attempts reveal what survived and what needs correction.

What the evidence supports
Evidence level: Strong research support
Meta-analyses support a general spacing advantage for later retention, including a smaller and more varied body of classroom research.
Limits and honest caveats: Evidence is strongest for verbal memory. Results vary across materials and contexts, and no universal interval or personalised formula has been established.
