A wrong answer needs the right response
Should every wrong answer lead to the same explanation?
Use a simple four-part scaffold to choose more informative feedback.
The short answer
First ask what happened: was the idea forgotten, partly remembered, misunderstood or confused with another idea? Then give specific corrective information and make a new attempt. These four categories are an original Itzako instructional scaffold—not a clinical or research-validated diagnostic taxonomy.
A red cross says only that the response missed the target. Useful feedback adds information about the gap and helps the learner act on it.

Think of a recent mistake. Did the answer disappear completely, arrive in fragments, rest on a wrong model or get mixed up with a nearby idea?

Diagnose lightly, respond specifically
Research does not treat feedback as one uniform intervention. What it contains, when it arrives and what the learner can do next all affect its usefulness.
Itzako’s four labels are a practical editorial scaffold: forgotten suggests a cue and fresh retrieval; partial suggests completing and retrying; misunderstood calls for a changed explanation; confused calls for contrast between nearby ideas.
A simple example
“Photosynthesis creates energy”
A learner remembers the topic and several terms but treats energy as something plants create from nothing. That is more than forgetting a word: the underlying relationship is misunderstood. Simply displaying the expected sentence may not repair the model; an explanation and new attempt are more useful.

Retrieve before you leave
Name the four Itzako error labels and their integrity boundary.
Show answer
Forgotten, partly remembered, misunderstood and confused. They are an original instructional scaffold, not a validated diagnostic taxonomy.
Use it today
After your next wrong answer, write one label and one next action. Always check the corrected explanation, then answer again.
Bring it back later
Return to the corrected idea on a later occasion. A correct retry now is useful, but later retrieval provides different evidence.
What the evidence supports
Evidence level: Itzako instructional model
Reviews support the importance of informative corrective feedback and show that errors can support learning in suitable low-stakes conditions when corrected.
Limits and honest caveats: Feedback effects vary widely. Uncorrected errors can persist. The four labels and their recommended actions are an evidence-informed Itzako design model, not a validated scientific classification.
