How often should you repeat something?
Why the next review depends on your retention goal and what you can currently retrieve.
The short answer
There is no single ideal interval. Separate repetitions rather than placing them back-to-back, then choose the next review according to when you need the knowledge and what you can currently retrieve.
A neat universal schedule is attractive because it removes a decision. The evidence supports spacing as a general principle, but not one perfect timetable for every learner, subject and goal.
Begin with the retention goal
Knowledge needed tomorrow and knowledge needed next year create different planning problems. Research on verbal learning shows that the useful gap changes with the intended retention interval.
Let the attempt update the plan
Try to retrieve before looking. If the idea is unavailable or wrong, correct it and bring it back sooner than a secure response. If it is easy, a longer gap may be a reasonable next experiment. This is adaptive guidance, not a proven personal formula.
A practical starting heuristic, not a law
Put at least one practice attempt on another occasion. Record the result and choose again. Do not mistake a tidy 1–3–7 or similar schedule for a scientifically optimal timetable.
What the evidence supports
Evidence level: Strong research support
Meta-analyses strongly support distributing practice for later retention and show that timing interacts with the intended retention period.
Limits and honest caveats: Classroom findings are variable, complex skills may behave differently and research does not prescribe a universal or personalised interval.
